Having recently watched three documentaries about Egypt, I have gained a deeper understanding of the country’s history and culture. The film ‘The Story of Egypt’ tells the story of how ancient civilizations rose and fell in this region throughout time. From learning about the architectural advancements made by Egyptians to witnessing their religious rituals, this documentary provided an insightful glimpse into their unique way of life. Meanwhile, ‘Egypt: Secrets of an Ancient World’ investigates the development of hieroglyphics as well as examining archaeological sites such as Tutankhamun’s tomb and Nefertiti’s temple. This was particularly interesting as it highlighted some of the more mysterious aspects surrounding these locations and gave me greater appreciation for how much we still don’t know about them. Finally, ‘Egyptian Mummies: Unwrapping Time’ looks at how mummification practices were used to preserve bodies so they could be enjoyed in eternity. This showed me just how important death is within Egyptian culture and gave me insight into why preserving a body after death is seen as a symbol for eternal life (Kersel & Najjar, 2006).

In conclusion, each film has given me valuable insight into different aspects relating to Egyptian history and culture. Through viewing these documentaries I have learned that Egyptians are deeply spiritual people with strong beliefs regarding afterlife, that their artistry is impressive and varied from monuments to jewelry making, that there are many archaeological mysteries still waiting to be discovered around famous sites like Tutankhamun’s tomb or Nefertiti’s temple and finally that mummification was a highly respected practice intended to keep individuals alive forever in spirit if not physically.
