A political party is made up of individuals who organize to win elections, operate government, an influence public policy. The Democratic and Republican parties are currently the primary parties in Congress. Members of a political party work together to win elections and influence the making of public policy. Political parties are much more than promotional symbols or ideological home bases for policy-interested voters. They raise enormous sums of money to support those running in state and local election. They influence policy through political advocacy and public information campaigns. Voting in an election and contacting our elected officials are two ways that Americans can participate in our democracy.
