Many countries around the globe employ a system of mandatory national service for their citizens. Such services may include, among other things, a required stint in the military. Some have argued that the United States should consider implementing a policy of mandatory national service, particularly as a way to promote national unity and understanding in a time of partisanship. Others, however, are skeptical about the proposal, particularly about the practical and financial challenges that would be involved. I believe compulsory service would save the government money and provide benefits to all citizens. If national service were mandatory, just as jury duty is required of everyone, the number of participants would grow and the resulting benefits would be exponentially higher.
