Understanding of your own social position in society

Ascribed status is a term used in sociology that refers to the social status of a person that is assigned at birth or assumed involuntarily later in life. Race, sex, birth order, and ethnicity are all examples of ascribed statuses. In contrast, our achieved statuses are positions that we have earned or chosen. Our achieved statuses are largely dictated by our abilities, skills, and life choices. one`s achieved statuses may include being a doctor, wife, and a mother. Status inconsistency is a situation where an individual`s social positions have both positive and negative influences on his or her social status. For example, a student could experience status inconsistency is she is both a criminal and an honor student, because these statuses are inconsistency with one another.
