Why have vampires, werewolves, and zombies become so popular in pop culture? Because they are terrifying and fun. We have the need to create a Boogeyman, something or someone to be the Bad Guy. And Monsters are just plain fun, they are scary so it’s okay to kill them, they aren’t really people. Nothing like a good old fashioned Monster Movie to get the blood pumping. Just look at what those “vampires, werewolves, and zombies” do. They kill people. Idolizing these mythical entities is expressing some indirect admiration for the way that each of these imaginary creatures brings death. Vampires drink your blood and, like werewolves, convert you into a non-human form while zombies merely eat your brains, the absolute core of your psyche and being. All of these acts represent annihilation of one’s human identity. It’s a form of ambulatory death. Just like being dead, but without any pesky graveyard maggots or uncomfortable crematoria flames.
