Why police patrol methods have remained reactive in nature
For most of its history in America, the work of the patrol officer and the investigator constituted the vast majority of police work. Uniformed officers patrolled the streets of America`s cities, serving as a highly visible deterrent to crime and attempting to catch criminals in the act. There essentially are two ways to police: reactive policing, which is epitomized by officers responding to calls-for service; proactive policing, which is getting out in front of events in the hopes of preventing crimes and working with the community to reduce crimes. Police patrol have remained reactive in nature for decades because the police are able to respond to a complaint from the public once a call to the police has been made.
