Literacy narratives are exactly what they sound like: narratives that have to do with literacy. They are often reflective, explanatory essays in which a writer explores and explains a person’s process of becoming “literate” and how those past experiences shape their current practices or understandings of literacies. This is what narratives to: they make sense of our past in light of our present situation and future aspirations.
Using the Digital Archive of Literacy Narratives (thedaln.org), identify at least four literacy narratives that share some kind of common focus (perhaps in subject, location, similar keywords, etc.). Use the “Search Narratives” tab to search for similar narratives.
The goal for this assignment is to write a 3-4 page essay that explains the similarities and differences between these four common literacy narratives. Ideally, your essay will construct a narrative about these literacy narratives: Do they tell us anything special about certain kinds of literacies? Do they tell us anything about how literacies function, are valued, or taught in certain communities? What could we take away from studying these four literacy narratives? Can you connect these literacy narratives to any of the scholarship we’ve read in the course (or scholarship outside the course)?
A literacy narrative tells the story of your engagement with language in your own words. Literacy narratives not only talk about memories, but also about a person’s discoveries, struggles, and victories with reading, writing, and speaking a language. This does not have to be in English. It might be your personal experiences with learning a second language and the influence it has made. The idea is to simply tell the world about your language and communication problems and progress. Literacy narratives can have a variety of subjects, topics, styles, moods, and tones, all of which you can customize.
