In terms of practical application, I was able to make use of various theories and models learnt through lectures during a placement at a community center where I provided therapeutic support to individuals in need. This included engaging with clients using active listening techniques while also allowing them the space necessary for self-reflection & healing. Moreover, due to the high number of clients seen each day –from diverse backgrounds– it was important for me to remain conscious of how cultural differences may affect my interactions with people thus leading me to adopt an open-minded approach towards counseling.
On top of this, I am also working hard on personal development which has included attending online yoga classes twice a week as well as taking part in volunteer work which not only serves as an opportunity for growth but also allows me time away from studies so that I can recharge before tackling upcoming assignments.
Overall, this semester has been invaluable in teaching me essential counseling skills while allowing room for individual exploration & growth both personally & professionally.
