The ethical implications of embryonic stem-cell research are highly debated as it involves the use of embryos in order to extract and cultivate these cells for therapeutic purposes. The extraction process often involves destroying the embryo, which is seen as immoral by many opponents of this type of research (Meyer et al., 2018). Furthermore, there remains a high risk potential for misuse should these resources end up in wrong hands (Buch & Watts 2003).

In addition to this ethical viewpoint, many also argue that funding directed specifically towards embryonic stem-cell research could be better spent on other types of treatments already available such as adult stem-cell therapy or tissue engineering (Chen et al., 2019). Adult stem cell therapy has been successfully used in organ regeneration while tissue engineering can create 3D structures that help mimic body functions thus providing alternative solutions to medical problems without having to resorting cloning techniques (Gao et al., 2020)..

Given both the moral and financial concerns associated with embryonic stem-cell research I have reservations about its further utilization. However no matter what my opinion may be, I still recognize its potential benefits for advancing medicine and helping people receive much needed treatments not otherwise possible without it.
