Reading the sample paper on “A Jury of Her Peers” by Susan Glaspell from Hacker and Sommers Writing about Literature, with MLA update, provided insight into how to effectively analyze literature. Firstly, one must develop an argument based on their interpretation of the text which should be backed up by evidence from both the primary source as well as other sources (Hacker and Sommers, 2020). The author of this sample paper does this well by using direct quotations to provide textual support for her interpretations while simultaneously providing analysis that is thoughtful yet concise. She also includes background information such as biographical details about Glaspell in order to give context for why certain themes may have been explored in the story which helps make her points more convincing. Additionally she ties together each point she makes throughout her essay providing a cohesive narrative that flows naturally adding structure and organization to her writing. Furthermore she utilizes outside sources but rather than just listing facts relies heavily on secondary material such as criticism or scholarly articles in order to offer a deeper understanding of what Glaspell was trying to convey with her work (Hacker and Sommers ,2020). In conclusion by reading this sample paper I learned that while there are no hard rules when it comes to literary analysis it is important to maintain objectivity; use textual evidence; include relevant information; explain connections between ideas; cite all sources properly and back up claims with strong arguments supported by external resources in order to create a compelling piece of writing.
