Concept of volume, conservation-piaget

Administer the following tasks to TWO or more children separately. It will be helpful if you select children who are different ages to see more of a contrast in their responses. Pay attention to the concepts of Centering and Reversibility. Reflect on what you discover and evaluate the usefulness of Piaget’s theories.

1. Ask your subject the following questions. “Pretend your (friend, teacher, aunt, uncle) is going to have a birthday. You want to really surprise him/her with a gift s/he will really like. How would you decide what kind of gift this person would really like?

Is the child able to understand another’s point of view (Theory of Mind) or do they think others have the same perspective as they do?

2.Have three containers (i.e. glasses), two identical and a third that is either taller/slimmer or shorter/fatter. Have a pitcher of water, or you may wish to use a colored liquid.

Using the identical containers, ask “Please pour water into both so they have exactly the same amount of liquid.” “Do both have the same amount? How do you know?”

Give the child the third container. “Now take this glass and pour into it the liquid from one of the others. Do they both have the same amount of liquid? How do you know? Pour this new one back into the original container. Now is there the same amount of liquid? How do you know?”

Of course we are testing for Conservation of Volume.

3. CONSERVATION OF NUMBER

Use 12 identical coins or poker chips. With the child seated at a table, lay out the disks in two identical rows, equally spaced in identical length.

“Which row as more coins, or are they the same?” (Wait for answer) “Are you sure? How do you know? How many coins are in each row?”

Spread one of the rows to about twice its previous length. Then repeat the above questions. And add “There must be more in this row because it’s longer.”

Now place the coins in two piles, and SECRETLY remove one of them. Ask “Are there still the same number of coins in each pile? How do you know? Why don’t you count them to be sure? Why are they different now?

4.CONSERVATION OF MASS

Have two balls of play dough. Ask “Do these two balls have the same amount of play dough?” If they answer No, then say “Go ahead and make it so they both have the same amount of play dough. Do they have the same amount? How do you know?”

Then say “Roll one of the balls into a snake. Do both have the same amount of play dough? How do you know?”

5.PREDICTION

Have some M&M’s in a brown paper sack. With the subject select 10 reds, 5 yellows and 2 blues. Have them count the M&M’s out with you. Put all 17 into the sack. Ask, “What if I put my hand into the sack and take out only ONE M&M. What color do you think it will be? Why?”

Run your experiment a few times to see if their predictions come true, or if they modify their prediction.

Sample Solution

e Australia milk industry economic can be affect by some of the following factors such as growth rate, purchasing power of consumers and demand for milk. There are research that shows the demand for A2 Milk is gaining traction among consumers due to the health benefits (A2 Milk Market: Global Industry Trends, 2019). In addition, since consumers are adjusting their lifestyle, company such as Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited formed partnership with A2 Milk to further provide growth opportunities to benefit both players. The demand for milk gives the industry an opportunity to be more profitable (Ibisworld.com, 2019). Another factor is purchasing power of consumer. Increase in purchasing power means consumers have more income to purchase more milk to adjust to their healthy lifestyle. This will create an opportunity for A2 to earn more. However, Australia economy is experiencing a slow growth, this will cause the profitability to decrease. In addition, some parents prefers to breastfeed their child therefore, this creates a threat to the demand of infant milk.
