Peter Michael Blau was an American sociologist and thinker who lived from February 7, 1918, to March 12, 2002. He was born in Vienna, Austria, and emigrated to America in 1939. In 1952, he finished his PhD doctoral thesis at Columbia University with Robert K. Merton, which laid the groundwork for an early theory of the dynamics of bureaucracy. He was given the chance to become a professor at the University of Chicago the following year, where he worked from 1953 until 1970.
