This may lead to limited access to necessary services such as support groups or medication-assisted treatment which can be essential components of a successful recovery program (Abbasi et al., 2019).
In addition, these restrictive policies also reduce opportunities for individuals living in poverty who may become trapped in cycles of recidivism due to lack of resources and employment opportunities (Goncalves et al., 2017). These problems are further compounded when healthcare systems fail to provide sufficient levels of care for individuals struggling with addiction. By focusing on evidence-based best practices more effective treatments options can become available allowing more people access to quality health services regardless of their backgrounds.
