One way to ensure that future generations have clean air to breathe is by implementing and enforcing the Clean Air Act. This legislation was passed in 1970 with the goal of protecting public health and welfare by reducing air pollutants (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 2019). The act has been amended twice since then–once in 1977 and again in 1990 – which further strengthened its provisions by including more stringent regulations on hazardous pollutants such as ozone, lead, particulate matter etc (Ullman et al., 2017).
More recently , the United States has taken steps towards a greener future with initiatives like the Clean Power Plan (CPP) which set limits on carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and encourages states to transition towards renewable energy sources (The White House 2015 ). The CPP also promotes efficiency measures such as heat rate improvements for existing coal-fired power plants so they produce fewer emissions but still meet consumer needs (Lacson 2016). These initiatives demonstrate how governments can take action to reduce air pollution – a crucial step if we are to improve air quality for generations to come.
