Across the nation, children of all backgrounds are experiencing a time in which discussions about race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, and culture are at the forefront of their everyday lives. Many people avoid these discussions because they fear that conversations about race, bias, and racism lead to feelings of anger, guilt, discomfort, sadness, and at times disrespect. The current state of our Union, however, no longer allows for these tough conversations to be ignored.  As a white, cisgender woman in America, I’ve been afforded certain privileges that people of color cannot access. Growing up in an upper middle class family has given me access to resources that are often inaccessible for people who don’t have similar privilege (Cox et al., 2017). Additionally, the race conversations I have with my friends or colleagues rarely feature discussions about systemic racism or issues specific to communities of color; instead we talk about racial jokes and microaggressions as though they’re acceptable. As someone living with these advantages due to the socio-economic hierarchy based on race and ethnicity, it is important for me to recognize how my personal experiences do not reflect those of all Americans (Delgado & Stefancic, 2012).
