Reflecting on My Nursing Journey: Learnings and Aspirations

As I look back on my learning experience in this nursing course, including the laboratory and clinical rotations, I am filled with both excitement and a sense of growth. The journey has been challenging at times, but the rewards of acquiring new knowledge and skills to become a competent nurse have been immensely fulfilling.

Exciting New Learnings:

1. Therapeutic Communication: The concept of therapeutic communication was not entirely new, but its depth and application in various clinical scenarios opened a new world for me. Learning to actively listen, build rapport, and use open-ended questions to understand patients’ needs and perspectives has been fascinating. It has helped me connect with patients on a deeper level and provide more personalized care.
2. Advanced Assessment Techniques: Performing comprehensive head-to-toe assessments and interpreting vital signs have offered me a deeper understanding of patients’ health conditions. The ability to identify subtle signs and symptoms and correlate them with specific diseases is crucial for timely diagnosis and intervention. Practicing these skills in the laboratory and clinical settings has instilled confidence and expanded my capacity to provide safe and effective care.

Surprising Learnings:

1. Cultural Competency: While I understood the importance of cultural sensitivity, I was surprised by its profound impact on patient outcomes. Learning about diverse cultural beliefs, values, and practices regarding health and illness has broadened my perspective and equipped me to provide culturally competent care. This understanding is essential to ensure that all patients receive respectful, equitable, and effective care.
2. Ethical Dilemmas: The complexity of ethical dilemmas in healthcare was somewhat surprising. Encountering scenarios that involved competing values and conflicting needs forced me to confront my own biases and develop a framework for ethical decision-making. This process has been challenging but invaluable, as it has equipped me to navigate complex situations with professionalism and integrity.

Challenges and Steps for Improvement:

1. Medication Administration: While I have acquired foundational knowledge of medication administration, I still find calculating dosages and accurately administering medications to be challenging. To further improve, I will utilize medication reference guides and practice calculations regularly. Additionally, I will actively seek feedback from experienced nurses and instructors during clinical rotations to gain practical experience and build confidence.
2. Prioritization of Care: Balancing multiple patient needs and prioritizing care effectively can be overwhelming at times. To overcome this, I will use prioritization frameworks and practice delegation skills to ensure that critical tasks are addressed first while also attending to other essential needs. Additionally, I will actively communicate with team members to collaborate and ensure efficient and effective care delivery.

As I progress in the nursing program, I am excited to:
