During my field education experience I had the opportunity to work with a client who was trying to cope with the recent death of her mother. She was struggling to come to terms with the loss and felt overwhelmed by it all. During our dialogue, she explained that she felt guilty for not spending more time or communicating more with her mother before she passed away. I asked her how she has coped so far and she mentioned that talking about her feelings has helped but that some days were still harder than others.

I then began to explain some theories related to grief such as Kubler-Ross’ five stages of grief which outlines denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance as phases one can expect when going through a major life change like this one (Kubler-Ross 1969). After discussing these stages in further detail we explored different ways for her to manage her emotions during difficult moments such as taking deep breaths or focusing on positive memories from times spent together with her mother. We also discussed other coping mechanisms such as engaging in activities that bring comfort or seeking support from friends and family members if needed.

I also tried applying an Interpretive approach when working with this client since it is based on understanding the meaning of events rather than solely looking at them from an objective viewpoint (Gans & Cardillo 2019). This allowed me to better comprehend where my client was coming from emotionally while simultaneously providing feedback without being overly directive or judgemental which would have been inappropriate considering what they were dealing with at the time . By doing so , I believe I was able show appropriate empathy towards their situation while giving constructive advice pertinent improving quality life despite tragedy occurring .

In conclusion , process recording allowed reflect upon dialogue between myself client concerning loss experienced recently order gain insight into dynamics operating within session along personal strengths weaknesses pertaining managing similar interactions future instances .
