Conflict, arguments, and change are natural parts of our lives, as well as the lives of every agency, organization, and nation. Conflict resolution is a way for two or more parties to find a peaceful solution to a disagreement among them. The disagreement may be personal, financial, political, or emotional. When parties are embroiled in a dispute, a neutral third party can help them come to an agreement through alternative dispute resolution methods. There are two basic types of alternative dispute resolution, or ADR: Mediation and arbitration (and sometimes a combination called med-arb). Although mediation and arbitration have the same goal in mind, a fair resolution of the issues at hand, there are some major differences which both parties must understand beforehand. The main difference between arbitration and mediation is that in arbitration the arbitrator hears evidence and makes a decision. In mediation, the process is a negotiation with the assistance of a neutral third party.
