Chapter 5 (Art) begins with an explanation for art being viewed as imitation. One of the 19th century artists featured in the chapter is Vincent van Gogh who was considered a Post-Impressionist artist. He was born in 1853 and died young as a result of suicide in 1890. In 1889, he created a painting which is considered a masterpiece called The Starry Night (slide 42 in the Art PowerPoint / e-book reference pages 114-116).
Based on images Van Gogh saw from his asylum window and his imagination, this painting and its meaning have inspired other artists, including 20th century rapper Tupac Shakur.
Assignment Guidelines: Write a 1-2 page comparison and contrast essay using the MLA format noted in English 1101 courses. Any quoted or reproduced content requires MLA citations and a Works Cited page. Compare and contrast the painting with the video/lyrics of Tupac from the posted video in this Unit 5 folder. Be sure to include the following:
• Include a brief summary for each artistic form. What is your interpretation of the meaning for each creation in terms of art being a source of imitation?
• Compare and contrast or analyze the similarities and differences between each artistic form. Regarding the painting, discuss the use of color, shapes, and images. Regarding the video/rap, be sure to discuss lyrics, images, and rhythms.
