Assessing the characteristics and quality of your writing
An essay for an English Composition Course
Reflecting on an experience by writing it down is one of the best ways to gain insight into that experience as well as the ability to use it effectively in your future work. The primary goal of your analysis is to assess the characteristics and quality of your writing as it stands right now and to establish a plan to improve your writing for your final paper.
As an analytical structure, you may adopt the pattern you have learned in any of the first three essays for this course. In other words, this essay could be an analysis of a text as was your argument analysis paper. Alternatively, you could shape it as an evaluation or as a causal analysis.
In this assignment, assess what you have done so far and what you need to accomplish by addressing these or related issues:
As a writer, what do you do well?
What aspect of your writing needs the most improvement?
On entering ENC 1101, what did you hope to gain?
In your career as a student or later as a professional, where will your written work have the greatest impact?
Devise headings that correspond to the parts of your analysis. Open and close the essay in a manner appropriate for academic work. Since you and your writing are the subject matter, you may use the first person (sparingly), but you should continue to use a level of formality appropriate for an academic audience.
Be honest. The purpose is for you to determine (1) what you do well as a writer (so you can foster the positive aspects) and (2) what you need to work on (so you can further develop skills and grow as an effective writer).
