Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a serious health problem that affects an estimated 1 in 3 adults. The condition can increase the risk of other health issues such as heart attack and stroke (CDC, 2020). In this case study, we will discuss the issue of hypertension in relation to a 56 year old African American male patient who presents with elevated blood pressure readings.
Data from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) illustrate that African Americans are at higher risk for developing hypertension than any other racial/ethnic group (CDC, 2020). This is due to factors such as lower socio-economic status which can lead to poorer access to healthcare services or limited knowledge about healthy lifestyle choices needed to reduce the risk of hypertension. Additionally, research indicates that African Americans face an increased risk due to biological predispositions towards certain diseases including hypertension (Lorenzi et al., 2018).
For baccalaureate prepared nurses, it is important to be aware of this correlation between race and hypertension when treating patients. Hypertension is a chronic condition but its effects can be managed by making lifestyle changes or prescribing medications. It is important for nurses working in diverse settings to recognize these potential disparities and create individualized care plans accordingly so that all patients have equal access to quality care regardless of their race or ethnicity (Lorenzi et al., 2018).
