As a student nurse in a hospital setting, I observed the time consuming and often inefficient process of admitting patients to the facility. Through my experience with observing patient admissions on the unit, it became evident that there was an opportunity for improvement as far as efficiently collecting necessary data while also providing a more effective patient experience (Bradshaw & Smith, 2014).
In order to assess the exact need for this project, I conducted interviews with nurses and other staff members who had direct contact with patients throughout their admission process. Additionally, I requested feedback from current and past patients regarding their experiences when being admitted to our facility. Through these interviews and surveys, common themes emerged indicating that too much time was being spent collecting information during the intake process – leading to extended wait times and reduced satisfaction among both staff and patients (Hinz et al., 2018). This feedback provided me with clear indications that implementing intake forms which could reduce wait times without sacrificing data collection were essential for enhancing the overall patient experience.
Further research revealed existing technology which could help facilitate improved efficiency during patient intakes. By examining various electronic health records systems available on the market today, it became apparent that integrating one into our facility would be beneficial in shortening wait times while still ensuring accuracy in data collected (Wang et al., 2016). Thus began my leadership project focused on implementing such a system within our hospital – something which is now successfully completed due in part by myself!
Overall, through conducting interviews and surveys of both staff members and patients alike combined with researching existing technologies meant to improve efficiency during admissions processes; I was able to effectively determine what needed improving within our hospital’s intake process. Additionally, this research allowed me insight into potential solutions which ultimately lead to successful implementation of new technology for streamlining admissions processes – resulting in enhanced patient experiences going forward.
