Military service is one of the most important jobs a person can choose to pursue, as it requires commitment and hard work from those involved. Unfortunately, in some countries including the United States, people are prohibited from serving in the military based on their sexual orientation. This policy is outdated and should be replaced with one that focuses on conduct rather than sexual orientation.

It has been demonstrated that there is no correlation between one’s sexuality and job performance (Winetrobe et al., 2017). Thus, it seems unfair to deny someone the opportunity to serve their country due solely to whom they love. Furthermore, such policies reinforce stereotypes about LGBTQ individuals by effectively telling them that they are not welcome in an organization dedicated to protecting citizens regardless of race or sex.

Furthermore, barring people based on their sexuality does nothing but harm morale within a unit as members may feel that certain individuals are being judged unfairly or even discriminated against for something outside of their control (Smith et al., 2020). This can create tension which negatively impacts both productivity and camaraderie among team members which is essential for success during operations.

In conclusion, military service should be based off of conduct rather than sexual orientation; it has been shown there is no correlation between how well someone performs a job and who they love therefore denying access due solely to this factor would be unjustified while also damaging morale amongst team members.
