John B. Watson is widely regarded as the founder of behaviorism, a school of psychology that focused on the study of observable behaviors instead of the inner workings of mental processes. Therefore, it can be argued that the research in this area was inevitable; even if Watson did not live or never wrote his famous article “Psychology as the Behaviorist Views It” (1913), someone else would have eventually brought it into mainstream consciousness.
Despite its inevitability though, there is no denying that John B. Watson made significant contributions to Behaviorism. His writings were responsible for introducing notions such as stimulus-response theory and stimulus-reinforcement conditioning which are still seen throughout psychological research today (Turner & Heron, 2018). Additionally he established a set of principles for how one should conduct behavioral studies which laid down some basic rules that later researchers adhered to when experimenting with animals and humans alike (Sroufe et al., 2005). Thus even though others were researching similar concepts prior to him, none had systematized it in such an influential way.
In conclusion, we can see why John B. Watson has been credited with founding behaviorism: although others had explored these ideas before him, his works popularized them among academics and pushed forward their growth into what they are today – making him an integral figure in psychology’s history.
