Sufficiency of Scripture is the belief that the Bible contains all that is necessary for faith and practice. It states that no other source outside of scripture, such as tradition or reason, is needed to obtain spiritual truth. The Bible teaches us this doctrine through multiple passages. In Deuteronomy 4:2 God instructs not to add any other source on top of His word: “You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it” (NASB). In 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Paul reminds us of the sufficiency of Scripture when he says “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work” (NASB). This doctrine holds great importance because it emphasizes our dependency on a righteous and perfect source like only God can provide. We know from Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (NASB) that we are unable to attain perfection without an additional help from a perfect being like God. Therefore, if we rely on Him alone instead of our own flawed sources then He will make up what we lack in fulfilling His ultimate purpose-to magnify His name through us.

The sufficiency doctrine also brings assurance during times when life seems confusing and chaotic due to its vast amount of resources with timeless truths about life situations. No matter how complex our situation may seem there will always be a clear solution found in scripture whether it be regarding personal relationships or professional decisions. Finally, this doctrine encourages us to study deeply into scripture because unlike any other resource bible contains unfailing truth waiting to be discovered by those who take time out in seeking Him diligently.
