Brita’s heart sank as she opened the door and stared into to face of the person she had never wanted to see again. She felt a sudden wave of emotion rush over her; fear, regret, but also anger at how easily he had disappeared from her life without so much as an explanation or goodbye. She paused for a moment before taking a deep breath and saying something – anything – that would break through this seemingly insurmountable barrier between them. But no words came out; instead there was nothing but silence punctuated by their mutual stares until eventually Brita found herself reaching out her hand towards him in friendship, ending their tense encounter with one act of reconciliation that said more than any spoken word ever could have done alone.
