The Legatum Prosperity Index is an annual ranking of countries around the world based on their levels of economic and social success. It measures human, as well as economic development by looking at a variety of components such as education, health care, entrepreneurship & opportunity, and governance. The index focuses on eight core pillars: economy; entrepreneurship & opportunity; governance; education; health; safety & security; personal freedom, and social capital. Each pillar is further broken down into sub-categories which are assigned individual scores (Legatum 2018).

In terms of Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries the index paints a mostly positive picture with many nations in that region ranking highly for factors such as education or personal freedom (Legatum 2018). This suggests that despite being relatively new to democracy these countries have been able to make significant progress over the past two decades. This can be attributed largely to advancements made in terms of good governance which has enabled them to benefit from better public services and improved access to economic resources (European Quality Of Government 2017). Overall then while there are still challenges faced by CEE nations when it comes to achieving prosperity they should be proud of their accomplishments thus far.
