In this assignment, you will be a health and safety manager in a company that has a manufacturing facility with multiple occupational hazards. This setting could be a place where you currently work, one that you may be familiar with, or one that you just find interesting. This assignment will address chemical hazards in the workplace: 1. Identify two hazardous chemicals to which workers are exposed in your facility. 2. Explain the routes by which workers can get exposure to these chemicals, and the associated potential health risks. 3. Choose one method to sample for each of these chemicals in the facility. Justify your choice. 4. Consider how the hazards may be controlled and select the best approach, the one that protects workers best.
Two hazardous chemicals to which workers may be exposed in my chosen facility are lead and cadmium. Lead is a heavy metal that can be found in many industrial processes such as welding, casting and battery manufacturing (OSHA 2021). Long-term exposure to lead can cause reproductive issues, nerve damage, kidney damage and anemia (OSHA 2021). Cadmium is another heavy metal commonly used in electroplating and the production of plastics; it has been linked to increased risk for certain types of cancer when inhaled or ingested into the body (EPA 2021)
In order to minimize worker exposure to these hazardous chemicals some strategies include:
• Implement engineering controls – Engineering controls involve making changes within the work environment in order reduce contact with dangerous substances by isolating them from workers or providing ventilation systems that filter out toxic fumes. For example implementing ventilators at stations where lead or cadmium is being handled will help reduce employee inhalation of toxic vapors (OSHA 2021). Additionally employers should also consider using machines or robots for tasks involving dangerous materials instead of human labor whenever possible.
• Provide personal protective equipment – Providing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks, respirators, goggles or gloves will help protect workers from direct contact with hazardous substances as well as inhalation of any airborne particles they may contain. Additionally PPE must also be properly maintained on a regular basis and replaced if necessary (OSHA 2021).
• Establish safety procedures – Establishing safety procedures involving proper storage, handling, labeling and disposal of hazardous materials must also be enforced in order to further reduce risks associated with chemical hazards at work. Employees should also receive regular training about safe practices around potential toxins so that they know how best to protect themselves from harm.
Overall, implementing engineering controls combined with proper use of PPE along with establishing safety procedures can ensure employees remain safe while working around potentially harmful substances.
understudies. Given the expected worth of such figures propelling scholastic achievement and hence impacting results like maintenance, wearing down, and graduation rates, research is justified as it might give understanding into non-mental techniques that could be of possible benefit to this populace (Lamm, 2000) . Part I: INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY Introduction The country is encountering a basic lack of medical care suppliers, a deficiency that is supposed to increment in the following five years, similarly as the biggest populace in our country’s set of experiences arrives at the age when expanded clinical consideration is essential (Pike, 2002). Staffing of emergency clinics, centers, and nursing homes is more basic than any time in recent memory as the enormous quantities of ‘people born after WW2’s start to understand the requirement for more continuous clinical mediation and long haul care. Interest in turning into a medical caretaker has disappeared as of late, presumably because of the historical bac
