Communicable diseases, also known as infectious diseases or transmissible diseases, are illnesses that result from the infection, presence and growth of pathogenic (capable of causing disease) biological agents in an individual human or other animal host. An example of a communicable disease is influenza. Influenza (flu) is a viral infection that attacks your respiratory system (your nose, throat and lungs). For most people, the flu resolves on its own. But sometimes, influenza and its complications can be deadly. Three methods for controlling the spread of flu are recommended: influenza vaccine, infection control, and exclusion. Seasonal influenza vaccines are the best available protection against influenza. The substantial economic impact of influenza on society results primarily from lost work time and reduced productivity of patients and caregivers and increased use of medical resources.
