Intercultural communication refers to the communication between people from two different cultures. (Chen & Starosta, 1998:28). Intercultural communication is a symbolic, interpretive, transactional, contextual process, in which people from different cultures create shared meanings. (Lustig & Koester, 2007:46). I have encountered and communicated with people who are different from me in terms of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation etc. Intercultural communication is important because it helps us to bridge any misunderstandings between individuals or groups due to differences in values, beliefs and perspectives. This can be applied to my personal life as it allows for a deeper understanding when interacting with diverse peers and also exposes me to new ideas that may contribute positively towards my growth as an individual. In terms of my social life, intercultural communication encourages empathy towards different backgrounds by learning about how other cultures operate which can lead to meaningful connections and relationships being built within society.
