Research Problem: The Impact of Social Media on Adolescent Mental Health

Research Question: How does social media use influence the mental health of adolescents aged 13-18?

Qualitative Study Design: Phenomenological Study

A phenomenological study will allow for a deep understanding of the lived experiences of adolescents related to social media use and mental health.

Procedures:

A. Role and Reflexivity: As the researcher, I will maintain a reflexive stance, acknowledging my own biases and assumptions. I will strive to remain objective and empathetic throughout the research process.

B. Data Collection Procedures:

1. Participant Recruitment: Purposive sampling will be used to recruit a diverse group of adolescents aged 13-18. Participants will be selected based on their varying levels of social media use and mental health experiences.
2. Semi-Structured Interviews: In-depth, one-on-one interviews will be conducted with participants to explore their experiences with social media and its impact on their mental health. The interview guide will include open-ended questions such as:
   • How often do you use social media?
   • What social media platforms do you use most frequently?
   • How does social media make you feel?
   • Have you experienced any negative impacts of social media use on your mental health?
   • How do you think social media influences your self-esteem and body image?
3. Focus Group Discussions: Focus groups will be conducted with small groups of adolescents to encourage discussion and sharing of experiences.

C. Data Recording Procedures:

• Audio Recording: Interviews and focus group discussions will be audio-recorded with participant consent.
• Field Notes: Detailed field notes will be taken during interviews and focus groups to capture non-verbal cues and contextual information.

D. Data Analysis Procedures:

• Transcription: Audio recordings will be transcribed verbatim.
• Thematic Analysis: Transcripts will be analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns and themes related to social media use and mental health.
• Coding and Categorization: Data will be coded and categorized to identify key concepts and relationships.

E. Interpretation:

• Interpretation of Themes: The identified themes will be interpreted in the context of existing literature on adolescent mental health and social media use.
• Theoretical Implications: The findings will be discussed in relation to relevant theories, such as social comparison theory and self-determination theory.
• Practical Implications: The study will provide insights into the potential negative impacts of social media on adolescent mental health and suggest strategies for prevention and intervention.

F. Validity and Reliability:

• Credibility: To enhance credibility, prolonged engagement with participants, triangulation of data sources, and member checking will be employed.
• Transferability: The findings may be transferable to similar populations and contexts.
• Dependability: The research process will be documented in detail to ensure transparency and replicability.
• Confirmability: Efforts will be made to minimize bias and ensure the objectivity of the findings.
