Conscientiousness, openness, and authoritarianism are three personality traits that have been shown to impact political attitudes. First, describe each trait and how it affects a person’s attitudes and behavior in general. Then, explain how each is linked to one’s political attitudes, ideologies, and views on particular political issues
In a Flemish-Belgian late teenage sample (N = 328), the relationships between five personality traits, three identity styles, and the prejudice dispositions of rightwing authoritarianism (RWA), social dominance orientation (SDO), and racial prejudice were explored. The findings suggest that openness to experience and agreeableness are related to racial prejudice, but that RWA and SDO fully moderate these relationships. Furthermore, while RWA is associated with conscientiousness and a lack of openness to experience, SDO is associated with a lack of agreeableness and a lack of openness to experience. The identity styles totally moderated the relationship between Conscientiousness and RWA, as well as the relationship between Openness to Experience and SDO.
