The inspiration for selecting this topic came from an article I read about how artificial intelligence may soon be used in courtroom decisions (Schuler). As technology advances further into our lives and businesses, it was interesting to note that even something as serious as a court case could potentially be influenced by these advancements. With all these potential changes on the horizon, coupled with some already underway such as digital evidence preservation platforms like Jencite Systems’ DigiGuardian (Eisenberg), researching how technology will shape the future of courts seemed both timely and relevant. Ultimately though, my main motivation for selecting this subject was my desire to explore what implications different technological advancements might bring when they meet up with one of our oldest forms of justice – namely courts – and what challenges or opportunities those developments could create.
