Recent studies have indicated that there could be a strong correlation between the COVID-19 pandemic and an increase in domestic violence occurrences. A survey conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) of 28 countries found that around one third of women reported facing some form of intimate partner violence since the outbreak began (WHO, 2020). These findings suggest that as restrictions and lockdowns continue so too will an escalation in violence within homes.

A potential explanation for this phenomenon is increased stress levels brought on by job loss, financial hardship, or other related concerns which can often lead to higher incidents of abuse. In addition to this, with people spending more time at home due to stay-at-home orders means more opportunities for conflict to arise without any reprieve from outside sources such as work or school.

It is vital that steps are taken both on a local level in order to protect those most vulnerable and internationally to address the root causes of domestic violence before it becomes an even larger problem. This includes but is not limited to providing economic assistance and mental health resources for survivors, improving access to emergency services such as shelters and hotlines, raising awareness about the issue through public campaigns targeting affected populations, investing in education initiatives which provide educational opportunities for girls & women ,and providing safe spaces both online & offline where victims can find support.
