Of Kotter’s eight steps, the concept that resonated most with me is “Creating a Sense of Urgency.” While I’ve always understood the importance of motivating change, Kotter’s emphasis on creating a sense of urgency has provided a new lens through which to view organizational transformation.

Why is Creating a Sense of Urgency Important?

A sense of urgency is crucial for several reasons:

  • Focuses Attention: A clear and present danger or opportunity can galvanize a team and prioritize change efforts.
  • Overcomes Inertia: It can break through complacency and encourage proactive action.  
  • Motivates Action: A sense of urgency can energize individuals and teams, leading to increased effort and commitment.  

How I Plan to Utilize This Concept

I intend to use this concept in my future professional endeavors by:

For example, if I’m leading a team to implement a new software system, I might highlight the potential loss of productivity or competitive advantage if the transition is delayed.
  2. Highlighting Opportunities: By emphasizing the potential benefits of change, I can motivate team members to embrace new ideas and approaches. For instance, when introducing a new process, I could focus on the increased efficiency and improved customer satisfaction that it will bring.
