The “Liberal Prescription” approach to crime is based on the idea of providing offenders with personal and social support in order to discourage future criminal behavior (Blumstein et al., 2014). This approach consists of four key components: removing barriers to employment, providing education and job training, offering mental health services, and implementing various strategies for youth development.

One strength of this approach is that it takes into account the underlying causes of crime while attempting to offer long-term solutions instead of focusing solely on punishment. For instance, by improving one’s educational or employment opportunities an individual may be less likely to engage in criminal activities due to having more legitimate means of obtaining money or status (Maguire & Potter 2010). Additionally, by providing mental health services those who suffer from conditions such as depression or anxiety can receive necessary treatment that could help them lead successful lives without resorting to illegal acts (Blumstein et al., 2014). Lastly, strategies for youth development are also beneficial as they provide adolescents with positive outlets for their energy while teaching them important lessons about morality and respect for societal norms (Kochel & Thompson 2012).

Despite its merits however there are still some weaknesses associated with the Liberal Prescription approach. One concern is the lack of evidence showing a clear link between these interventions and reductions in crime rates (Blumstein et al., 2014). Additionally, many programs fail due to funding issues which can limit their effectiveness significantly (Kochel & Thompson 2012). Moreover, since not all offenders respond positively when offered these types of supports there can often be difficulty determining which individuals will benefit most from such initiatives making it difficult for policy makers to allocate resources accordingly (Maguire & Potter 2010).

In summary, the Liberal Prescription offers many potential benefits but also has some drawbacks that should be taken into consideration when evaluating its efficacy. While further research needs to be done regarding how best utilize these techniques effectively some aspects have proven effective at helping reduce criminality among certain populations.
