• What FLE content area are you addressing?
• Of all the needs that families and individual have, why did you choose this topic?
• Why do you feel there is a need for this kind of program?
• Can you point to any similar existing programs? How will yours be different or better?
• Goals of the Program: what do you hope participants gain by participating?
• Target audience: families, kids, teachers, siblings?
o Why do you think this is the right audience?
• Format: face-to-face meetings (one or more?), online, phone, booklet, blog, newsletter, video?
o Why do you think this is the right format?
• What topics will you cover? Why?
• What kinds of people can you enlist to help you make this program stronger?
• What kind of funding will you need? Who might provide that funding (do NOT simply say the government or grants – you must think outside the box and justify your reasoning)?
• What do you think the strengths of your program will be? What will the weaknesses be?
• After the program is over, how will you assess if it met its goals?

Educational Program: Building Healthy Sibling Relationships

FLE Content Area: Internal Dynamics of Families

Needs Addressed: Strong sibling relationships contribute to positive emotional well-being, social development, and conflict resolution skills in children and adolescents (Kerr et al., 2010). However, sibling rivalry and conflict are also common occurrences. This program aims to equip families with strategies to foster healthy and supportive sibling bonds.

Justification: Sibling relationships are a significant influence throughout life. By providing tools to manage conflict and build stronger connections, this program can contribute to a more positive and supportive family environment.

Existing Programs: Several sibling relationship programs exist, but many focus on managing conflict resolution after it arises. This program aims to be preventative, teaching communication and cooperation skills.

Program Goals:

  • Participants will identify positive aspects of healthy sibling relationships.
  • Families will learn strategies for promoting cooperation and communication between siblings.
  • Parents will gain tools to manage conflict constructively.
  • Siblings will develop skills for empathy and perspective-taking.

Target Audience: Parents and Siblings (ages 8-12)

  • Rationale: Parents play a crucial role in shaping sibling interactions. Including siblings allows them to actively participate and learn alongside their parents.

Format: Interactive Workshops (2 sessions)

  • Justification: Interactive workshops allow for open discussions, role-playing activities, and skill practice, fostering engagement and knowledge retention.

Program Topics:

  • Session 1: The Benefits of Strong Sibling Relationships
    • Why sibling relationships matter throughout life
    • Identifying positive aspects of healthy sibling bonds
    • Communication skills for siblings (active listening, “I” statements)
  • Session 2: Managing Conflict Constructively
    • Common triggers for sibling conflict
    • Strategies for problem-solving and compromise
    • Techniques for de-escalation and emotional regulation

Enlisting Help:

  • Family therapists can provide expertise in sibling relationship dynamics.
  • Teachers can offer insights into sibling interactions observed in the classroom setting.
  • Older siblings can share their experiences and mentor younger siblings.

Funding:

  • Partnering with local schools or community centers can provide space and potential co-funding.
  • Fundraising events or workshops offered for a fee can generate additional funds.
  • Seeking sponsorships from businesses focused on family well-being.

Program Strengths:

  • Interactive and engaging format
  • Focus on preventative strategies and skill-building
  • Collaboration among parents and siblings

Program Weaknesses:

  • Limited reach – may not be accessible to all families
  • Sustainability – relies on continued funding and volunteer support
