Diabetes is one of the leading non-communicable diseases, contributing to the increasing disease burden among the old adults. There is an association between diabetes and socioeconomic factors such as education, employment status, wealth and social class. Diabetes is also related with behavioral characteristics of the population such as physical inactivity, poor dietary intake, inadequate intake of fruits and vegetables, tobacco use and alcohol consumption. The determinants of diabetes among older adults are a clear indication of the need for diabetes prevention programme targeting the young people and that are gender specific to reduce the burden of diabetes at old age.
