Development of the RDT perspective and how it differs from IT

Discuss the development of the RDT perspective and how it differs from IT. In addition, present an analysis of whether RDT, IT, or both are useful for explaining the strategic behavior of a healthcare organization where you are or have been employed.

Description and history of the organization selected for analysis.

The Resource Dependence Theory (RDT) perspective is a management theory that explores the impact of external resources on an organization’s strategic decision-making, performance, and survival. It was developed in the 1970s by Pfeffer & Salancik to explain how organizations must interact with their environment in order to achieve and maintain success (Gulati & Singh, 1998). This theory differs from Information Technology (IT) in that it focuses more on inter-organizational relationships rather than technology itself. RDT suggests that organizations must establish and maintain ties with other organizations in order to acquire vital resources for growth and innovation (Hidalgo et al., 2020).

Both RDT and IT are useful for explaining strategic behavior within healthcare settings. While RDT emphasizes the importance of developing relationships with outside entities such as suppliers or government agencies for resource acquisition purposes, IT explains how information can be used strategically to make informed decisions about operations or services offered by healthcare facilities. For example, an organization could leverage data analytics technologies like predictive modeling or artificial intelligence (AI) to identify areas where patient outcomes or satisfaction can be improved upon (Fang & Kuo 2018). Additionally, they could use cloud computing solutions to save costs while still being able to access necessary tools/systems required for conducting business operations efficiently.

In my experience working at a local hospital setting, I have found both theories useful when considering how best to enhance our organizational goals. We were able use cloud based services alongside established partnerships with regulatory bodies like Medicare/Medicaid Services which enabled us to reduce operational costs while still providing high quality care services. In addition, we leveraged AI technologies such as machine learning algorithms which enabled us reach higher levels of patient satisfaction through better diagnosis rates and streamlined processes.

As a computer science teacher, I need to have a secure understanding of numeracy myself and understand how important numeracy is. With this, I can become a more inclusive teacher. We rely on the mathematical concepts to help us solve complex problems in Computer Science. That said, ‘by giving an exciting, fun real-world context for the importance of numbers and mathematics in Computer Science topics can also be used to support numeracy’ (Teaching London Computing, n.d). This can be seen from the activities students are required to complete during my lessons. They closely relate to everyday life examples and how certain machines may work. For example a speed camera, calculator and working out grade boundaries which students can adapt and use to work out their own assessment grades. This mirrors what the National Curriculum says about sing mathematical reasoing and numeracy in all subjects so students understand the importance of it. (DfE, p103, 2013) (APPENDIX)

Alongside numeracy is the importance of literacy. Michael Wilshaw (2012) stated that it should be everyone’s priority in all schools to improve literacy standards, supported by OFSTED’s report ‘Improving literacy in secondary schools’ (2013). The report highlights that literacy is a key issue no matter what subject is being taught (OFSTED, 2013, p.8). In Computer Science, if students are not fluent in reading and writing, these difficulties will have a huge effect on students’ ability to evaluate and review their programs and these would not be conducted efficiently. Students also need to be able to communicate effectively when problem solving, in order to explain their thought process in solving a set task, or to gain further assistance. If they cannot communicate, support or explanations could be interpreted incorrectly.

The National Literacy Trust (2014) defines literacy as, ‘the ability to read,
