Deviance is relative, which means that there is no one-size-fits-all definition of what constitutes deviant conduct. Deviance can be defined in terms of a specific standard, yet no standard is absolute or fixed. As a result, deviation fluctuates throughout time and location. A conduct that is considered aberrant today in one civilization may be regarded normal in another. It’s important to distinguish between social deviation and statistical rarity. People whose behavior or attributes are observed in just a small percentage of the population are statistically uncommon, but this does not mean they are socially deviant.
