Nursing is a profession that exists to provide quality care and services to individuals, families, and communities. Nursing’s metaparadigm consists of four interrelated domains: nursing, environment , health , person . In this paper I will discuss my personal definition of these four domains within my own philosophy of nursing.

Nursing is defined as “the diagnosis and treatment of human responses to actual or potential health problems” (Alligood & Tomey, 2014). My philosophy of nursing includes emphasis on the importance of collaboration between nurse and patient in order for desired outcomes to be achieved. Additionally, I believe that nurses should strive to treat each individual holistically by considering all aspects such as physical , mental , emotional well being . By acknowledging the unique characteristics – such as cultural background or life experiences -of each individual nurse can better tailor their approach when providing care (Alligood & Tomey, 2014).

I define environment as “the external conditions in which an individual exists at any given time” (McEwen & Wills 2019). The environment affects not just physical well being but also various other aspects such as spiritual well-being which must be taken into consideration when treating patients (Cherry et al., 2020). Therefore it is important for nurses have an understanding of how different environments affect individuals in order to form appropriate interventions that promote positive outcomes.

My definition for health is “a state if complete physical, mental, social and spiritual well being” (McEwen & Wills 2019) According to this definition health is seen not only through absence from disease but also presence with optimal functioning across all domains. Thus it follows that one cannot achieve true health without considering each domain and how they interact with one another.

Person can be defined as “an individual human being who has certain abilities and qualities that distinguish them from others” (McEwen & Wills 2019) Each person has unique needs and preferences due to influences from factors such a culture or lifestyle choices so it becomes important for nurses acknowledge these differences when providing care for them.

In conclusion, my philosophy combines concepts from all four domains with emphasis on collaboration between nurse-patient relationship , consideration of environmental factors affecting patients needs along with focus on holistic concept when addressing physical, mental social emotional components leading towards achieving overall wellness.
