Ethnocentrism is the belief that one’s own culture is superior than those of others and can lead to prejudice, discrimination and even violence. This mindset can be seen in examples from my immediate environment such as those who hold negative opinions towards immigrants, minorities or anyone perceived to be “different” due to their cultural backgrounds. For instance; I have heard people make remarks about certain ethnic groups such as “they should all go back where they came from” which not only highlights a sense of superiority but also demonizes individuals based on their ethnicity.
