Ethnocentrism is the belief that one’s own culture is superior than those of others and can lead to prejudice, discrimination and even violence. This mindset can be seen in examples from my immediate environment such as those who hold negative opinions towards immigrants, minorities or anyone perceived to be “different” due to their cultural backgrounds. For instance; I have heard people make remarks about certain ethnic groups such as “they should all go back where they came from” which not only highlights a sense of superiority but also demonizes individuals based on their ethnicity. Similarly ; there are those who attempt to impose their values , beliefs and customs onto others so that they conform instead of respecting and celebrating diversity.

In contrast; cultural relativism involves accepting the values , practices and beliefs of another group without passing judgement . In my experience this has been demonstrated through initiatives for bridging social divides between cultures such as interfaith dialogues or multicultural events . These efforts allow for different communities to come together in mutual understanding while learning more about each other which ultimately creates stronger connections between them.
