1. Describe an example from your experience of culturally competent care that you observed and/or delivered.
2. Describe an example of failed care that could be attributed to a health professional’s lack of cultural competence, and explain why.
During my clinical rotation at Kisumu County Hospital, I observed a nurse practitioner providing culturally competent care to a Luo patient with sickle cell disease. The nurse practitioner was knowledgeable about the cultural beliefs and practices of the Luo people and incorporated these into the patient’s care plan. For example, the nurse practitioner consulted with the patient’s family about traditional healing practices and worked with them to develop a plan that integrated both Western and traditional medicine. This approach demonstrated respect for the patient’s cultural background and helped to build trust and rapport.
I also witnessed an instance where a lack of cultural competence led to a negative patient experience. A healthcare provider was treating a Muslim patient who was fasting during Ramadan. The provider was unaware of the patient’s religious beliefs and insisted that they eat and drink medication, even though the patient was fasting. This action was disrespectful and caused the patient distress. The provider’s lack of understanding of the patient’s cultural beliefs led to a breakdown in communication and a negative patient experience.
Conclusion
Cultural competence is essential for providing high-quality healthcare to patients from diverse backgrounds. By understanding and respecting the cultural beliefs and practices of their patients, healthcare providers can build trust, improve communication, and enhance the overall patient experience.
