Friedrich Kittler’s theory of film as a form of “mechanized death” can be read in conjunction with Martin Heidegger’s “Questing Concerning Technology.” While both theorists raise questions concerning the implications of technology, they arrive at very different conclusions. Overall, then it appears that both Friedrich Kittler and Martin Heideggar share some common ground when discussing technology even if their ideas may differ in terms of application. Both recognize its potential for empowerment yet still advise caution against becoming complacent towards its influence over our lives. In this way they can serve as complementary perspectives on how best to engage with these increasingly pervasive tools while being mindful not only of their power but also our own agency within them.
