Garment Flats

Select a Denim garment from the Online Garment Rack or from your Personal Wardrobe to use to draw your garment Flats. Document the fabric content, price, and brand of the garment in your sketchbook for future reference.
Use a Flat Template, tracing paper, and pencil to draw front and back views of the garment. Your final page for the garment will include the front- and back-view photographs as well, so consider the final layout when determining the scale of your drawings. Make sure to include any Zoom Details or special design features of the garment that are relevant to communicating the overall garment design.
Once you have perfected your Flats in pencil, use your Micron pens and light table/box to transfer the final Flats to an 11 x 17-inch Bristol Board page. Your final page for your garment should include front- and back-view Flats and front- and back-view photographs of the garment. The scale should be the same as you would use for the Final Project, and the presentation should be neat, clean, and well organized.
Part 2: Detail Study

Visit the store of a Denim-based Brand such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Levi Strauss, Lucky Brand, or Old Navy to conduct denim research. Research and photograph four different Back Pocket and Yoke details. In your sketchbook, document the garment fabric and brand/designer for each of your researched details. Take high-resolution photographs, so you can print them out and present them as a page of market research in your sketchbook.
Design a Back Pocket Detail and a Yoke Detail by playing with the proportions, type of stitching, construction, and finish of the detail. Sketch your personalized design of this detail in your sketchbook. Your design should reflect your unique point of view as a designer, so have fun! Select the design that speaks to you most. You will construct this detail as a part of your 3D Development.
Submit your sketchbook pages showing your market research and design sketches.
Part 3: 3D Development

Visit your local fabric store to select a Denim fabric that would be suitable for a Denim garment, and purchase one yard of this fabric. Pay attention to the content, weight, and properties of the fabric to make sure that it is appropriate for your 3D Development. You may also source a Denim fabric from your personal fabric archives.
Using your bought or sourced denim fabric, construct this detail, paying close attention to the details, shapes, and proportions that you included in your sketch. Use thread of an appropriate type, thickness, and color.
Once you have finalized your 3D Sample, sketch a Zoom Detail Flat of this detail. Perfect the flat first in pencil and then use your Micron pen to trace over the pencil version for your final Flat.
Present your 3D Sample and Flat sketch on an 11 x 17-inch Bristol Board page. Consider the scale of your Flat sketch and the size of your 3D Sample needed for the layout. The scale should be the same as you would use for a final project, and the presentation should be neat, clean, and well organized.
Submit a single, comprehensive posting of your new development work in your Personal Topic. Your instructor will review this post and offer feedback and direction once per module (within five business days for fall and spring semester and three business days for summer semester). All visuals should be submitted as attachments in JPEG format.

A flat sketch is a two-dimensional technical drawing that uses basic solid lines to depict a garment. It’s akin to a “blueprint” of your fashion design, similar to an architect’s blueprint for a house before construction can begin.
The term “flat” relates to the way they’re drawn: envision the garment lying flat on a table, with all the details visible from either the front or back. Aside from front and back views, some brands will include detail drawings or side views to show how panels go around the body or how different elements of the garment should be built.
