By visiting the place where work is done, leaders gain valuable insight into the flow of value through the organization and often uncover opportunities for improvement and learn new ways to support employees. The approach is a collaborative one, with employees providing details about what is done and why. Great results depend on thoughtful planning, execution, and follow-up. One key to effective Gemba walks is a visual, well communicated Gemba walks plan that enables people to expect a visit and not be caught off guard. Challenge the result – ask what is the main problem the site is trying to solve right now. Challenge on flow – challenging on flow also gives you the opportunity to refocus teams on customer preferences and expectations. A real danger of Gemba walks is that, like most corporate initiatives, they become transactional – a ritualized “check the boxes” exercise without deep involvement in deepening the thinking on the business.
