Gender refers to the characteristics of women, men, girls and boys that are socially constructed. This includes norms, behaviors and roles associated with being a woman, man, girl or boy, as well as relationships with each other. From a social constructionist perspective, gender is not an internalized personality structure as much as it is a social fiction we work to maintain through our everyday social practices. We use gender as a lens through which to perceive and evaluate one another. Gender being socially constructed means society has made a framework of what male and female roles in and out of the home are supposed to be. Gender is made by our society`s guidelines on what is “acceptable” gender roles.
