Gender roles can have a significant impact on relationships during young adulthood. For example, women are often expected to be nurturing caregivers while men may feel pressure to assume a leader role within a relationship. These pressures can lead to confusion as young adults struggle to reconcile traditional gender expectations with their emerging identities (D’Augelli & Patterson, 1995). It is important that they develop an understanding of themselves first before navigating these stereotypes in order to form meaningful connections.

However, not all societies promote rigid gender roles so it’s possible for individuals to challenge these norms by embracing more fluid identities or experimenting with non-traditional approaches towards forming relationships (Udry et al., 2019). The best case scenario would be for all people regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation to move beyond socially prescribed constraints when forming intimate connections. Ultimately it should come down to what feels right for each person involved rather than being dictated by societal conventions.
