In our current unit, we are discussing common grammar/punctuation errors like sentence fragments, run-on sentences, and comma splices. In “Why Grammar Snobbery Has No Place in the Movement,” Melissa A. Fabello argues the fine line between the issues of understanding and demanding grammar, between “appreciating language and being a snob.”
Enter into the debate yourselves by providing your own opinion on whether or not correct grammar is always necessary. Consider the following questions as you construct your post: Do you feel that grammar is a reflection of intelligence? Could “bad” grammar possibly be a reflection of something else? In Melissa A. Fabello’s article “Why Grammar Snobbery Has No Place in the Movement,” she questions the line between appreciating language and grammatical correctness and being a snob. I believe that while understanding and practicing proper grammar is important, it is not always necessary or beneficial to strictly adhere to these rules as they can be rooted in privilege.

I do not think that grammar is necessarily a reflection of intelligence, considering there are many factors – such as access to education – that can impact one’s ability or desire to practice proper grammar (Fabello, 2014). Furthermore, I consider incorrect grammar more often than not a reflection of intersecting privileges such as socioeconomic status or native language rather than an indicator of intelligence (Fabello, 2014). In this sense then enforcing strict grammatical correctness could be seen as oppressive for certain groups who may have differing cultural norms surrounding language usage.

When observing someone using \”improper\” grammar in conversation or writing I generally feel empathy rather than annoyance; knowing the potential ramifications poor grammar can have on an individual has allowed me to become more aware and understanding of other people’s experiences with language (Fabello, 2014). That said my feelings do change when someone corrects my own use of improper grammar; while often well-intentioned comments like this can still come across as condescending making me feel embarrassed or defensive (Fabello ,2014)

Overall then while good grammar is important – particularly when communicating with others in professional settings – it should never be viewed as completely essential nor used punitively against those whose experience with language may differ from our own. Everyone should strive towards being cognizant both of their privileged positions within systems like linguistics but also their power over others when it comes to enforcing so-called \”correct\” standards.
