Role of Technology: How can technology, such as mobile health apps or electronic reminders, contribute to better adherence? Are there any potential drawbacks to these technologies?
Barriers to Medication Adherence
In my experience and research, I have encountered several common barriers to medication adherence:
- Lack of understanding: Patients may not fully understand the importance of taking their medication as prescribed, or they may not understand the instructions correctly.
- Side effects: Patients may experience unpleasant side effects that can make it difficult to adhere to their medication regimen.
- Cost: The cost of medication can be a significant barrier for some patients, especially those without insurance or with high deductibles.
- Forgetfulness: Patients may simply forget to take their medication, especially if they are taking multiple medications or have cognitive impairments.
- Cultural or linguistic barriers: Patients from different cultural backgrounds or with limited English proficiency may face challenges in understanding and following medication instructions.
